The submitted painting Spring Waters—a view of tall trees along a riverbank in the background of the composition, a blooming grassy strip in the middle ground, and flowering aquatic plants in the foreground, depicting a place where the river’s meanders converge—is undoubtedly a beautiful work by the landscape painter Václav Radimský from the period after 1920, when he returned home from France following the end of the First World War. During the time Radimský lived in Giverny, the River Seine was his constant source of inspiration; after returning to his family home in Pašinka near Kolín, he devoted himself with equal enthusiasm to the River Elbe and its inlets, slopes, meadows, and fields throughout the surrounding countryside.

The painting is characterized by a compelling composition and an effective arrangement of color tones—a full range of greens, browns, and blues, from light to dark values. The overall impression is emotional and joyful; Radimský aptly captured the mood of early summer, when nature is still fresh and everything is in bloom. The painting Spring Waters exemplary documents Radimský’s mastery as a landscape painter.

The originality of the work was consulted and confirmed by PhDr. Michael Zachař.
